Vienna, 04 August 2026

According to media reports, Mussab Abou R., the former head of the criminal police in the Syrian city of Raqqa, who was sentenced to eight years in prison in Vienna, has disappeared and may have returned to Syria.

On Friday it became known that Mussab Abou R., the former chief of the criminal police in Raqqa under the regime of the ousted Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, can apparently no longer be found at his last known location in Austria. The Austrian authorities are examining indications that the convicted man may have made his way back to his country of origin. Details of the alleged escape have not officially been confirmed so far.

The Vienna Higher Regional Court had sentenced Mussab Abou R. to eight years' imprisonment for crimes against humanity. The charges were based on his role as a senior police commander in Syrian Raqqa, a city that during the civil war was at times considered a stronghold of the terrorist militia Islamic State. Statements and evidence relating to a further accused, Khaled Al H., also played a central role in the proceedings.
