US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday via the platform Truth Social that he will not for now sign a housing bill previously passed by Congress until the "Save America Act" he is demanding has cleared Parliament.

The housing bill, which had passed the Senate on Monday by a vote of 85 to 5 and the House of Representatives on Tuesday by a vote of 358 to 32, was described by US media as the largest housing-affordability legislation in decades. It is intended to expand the housing stock, loosen building regulations and make it easier to purchase residential property. Trump wrote on Truth Social: "Today's Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency".
