WASHINGTON/TEHERAN — May 12, 2026

U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticized Iran's demands in ongoing negotiations, calling them "garbage" and casting uncertainty over a fragile ceasefire.

Escalating Tensions

Trump's comments came during a press briefing where he openly disparaged Iran's latest proposals. "Ich würde sie (die Waffenruhe, Anm.) im Moment als äußerst brüchig bezeichnen, nachdem ich diesen Müll gelesen habe, den sie uns geschickt haben," he told reporters, using German to describe the ceasefire as "extremely fragile" after reviewing what he called "garbage" from Tehran.

The U.S. president did not specify which demands he found unacceptable, but his tone suggested a hardening stance. "Ich habe es nicht einmal zu Ende gelesen," he added, indicating he hadn’t even finished reading the document. The remarks underscore the deteriorating diplomatic climate between the two nations, which have been locked in negotiations over a ceasefire brokered earlier this month.
