US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday local time that new consumer price data were 'great' and declared 'I love inflation,' drawing criticism from Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as annual inflation reached a three-year high of 4.2%.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump reacted to fresh Labor Department figures showing that consumer prices had risen 4.2 percent in May compared with the same month a year earlier. 'Die Zahlen waren großartig (...) Ich liebe die Inflation,' Trump said, calling the numbers excellent and welcoming the rise in prices. The remarks were quickly seized on by Democrats, who have made the cost of living their central campaign issue ahead of the November congressional midterm elections.
