Ankara, 06 July 2026

US President Donald Trump has intensified the weeks-long dispute with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni with a mocking post on his platform Truth Social shortly before the NATO summit in Ankara.

On Truth Social, Trump published an image showing him together with Meloni. Over the photo, he wrote in capital letters the English sentence: "Restraining order needed". With this, he alluded to a restraining order, as can be applied for in the United States in cases of harassment or threat. With the phrasing, Trump indirectly implied that the Italian head of government was intrusive or burdensome toward him.

The post appeared just a few hours before the start of the NATO summit, which is taking place on 7 and 8 July in the Turkish capital Ankara. Both Trump and Meloni are taking part in the meeting of heads of state and government. Observers consider the timing to have been deliberately chosen, as Trump made the tensions with a close European ally public immediately before central negotiations on the future of the alliance.
