US President Donald Trump portrayed his relationship with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as friendly and played down personal tensions during a meeting on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara.

Trump made the remarks on the sidelines of a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara. "I find her actually quite nice," he said with regard to Meloni. The remark came amid a series of public verbal sparring matches between the US president and the Italian head of government that had dominated headlines in the days before.

The trigger for the current exchange was a social media post by Trump in which he claimed that Meloni had asked him for a joint photo at the G7 summit in the French city of Évian. Above the published image, in capital letters, it read: "Restraining order needed" – which can be understood in English as something like "Contact ban required" or "Restraining order required." Meloni promptly rejected this account and described it as "completely fabricated".
