US President Donald Trump declared that Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin had agreed on steps to de-escalate the conflict, while the Kremlin initially remained silent regarding his remarks.
Trump backed his account with references to an alleged "energy" ceasefire. Russian observers reacted with irony to the formulation. St. Petersburg political scientist Mikhail Vinogradov stated: "Die Eskalation nennt sich plötzlich 'Energie'-Waffenstillstand."
The Kremlin initially offered no confirmation of the arrangements cited by Trump. Nor were any substantive details provided regarding the scope, timeframe, or verification mechanisms of a possible agreement.
