Munitions stockpiles in focus

Concerns about scarce ammunition relate, according to the New York Times, primarily to air defense systems such as Patriot missiles. Trump, however, dismissed these concerns aboard the presidential aircraft, declaring: "It is more than we could ever use." He also announced that stockpiles, including of Patriot systems, would be expanded. "We have a lot of ammunition, different kinds of it," he said.

In this context, Trump pointed out that his predecessor Joe Biden had delivered ammunition — including Patriot missiles — to Ukraine for defense against Russian aggression. Trump suggested that these deliveries may have strained current US reserves, without elaborating further.

Mediators and regional incidents

According to available information, mediators in the talks include, among others, Qatar and Pakistan. Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Iraq, however, reported Iranian drone attacks today, underscoring the fragile security situation in the region.

In recent months, Trump had repeatedly threatened to target civilian infrastructure in Iran such as bridges, roads, and power plants. By suspending the attacks — "He had surprisingly halted the attacks over the weekend," as the Deutschlandfunk report puts it — he is now first giving diplomatic efforts some breathing room. Trump, however, announced that he would not give the negotiations much time.

From the White House's perspective, Tehran's willingness to engage in dialogue shows that US strength is working. Trump said there are good talks with Tehran. However, should these fail, the warning follows: "We will again use very strong military force." The coming days are likely to show whether the diplomatic pause holds or whether fighting resumes quickly.
