Right-wing US online commentator Tucker Carlson has publicly distanced himself from US President Donald Trump's Republican Party and announced that he will no longer support the party.

Background

On the podcast "Can't be censored," the 57-year-old said that he had voted Republican his entire life but considers the party's current policies to be "unmoralisch und nicht zu verteidigen". When asked whether he would vote for a different party in the future, Carlson replied: "Auf keinen Fall würde ich die Republikanische Partei unterstützen". At the same time, he also ruled out supporting the Democrats: "Die Demokratische Partei werde ich auch nicht unterstützen".

As the reason for the break, Carlson cited the Republicans' foreign policy, saying that they would place "the interests of another country above those of their own citizens". Carlson specifically named Israel in this context. He had previously criticized the US president over the war conducted jointly with Israel against Iran.
