Vienna, Austria — May 18, 2026

Two children, aged four and six, were resuscitated following an apartment fire in Vienna-Ottakring on May 18, leaving both in critical condition.

Emergency Response and Rescue Efforts

Firefighters arriving at the scene in Effingergasse evacuated the children from the burning apartment and immediately initiated resuscitation efforts. The younger child was airlifted to a hospital by helicopter, while the older child was transported by ambulance. Both suffered cardiac arrest, likely due to smoke inhalation, according to emergency responders.

The Special Intervention Group (SEG) and other emergency services arrived around 17:00, with the fire department beginning life-saving measures before the emergency medical team reached the scene. A 14-year-old girl was also hospitalized, though her injuries were described as psychological distress rather than physical harm.
