Two Collisions Involving E-Scooters in Graz: Cyclists Injured, Riders Flee

In the second accident, which according to the investigations to date also occurred on Keplerstraße, a 35-year-old cyclist wanted to overtake an e-scooter rider traveling ahead of him. According to the investigations to date, the unknown man suddenly swerved to the left, causing the collision.

Both parties fell, spoke briefly, and then continued on their way. The cyclist only sought medical help later due to increasing pain. A collarbone fracture was diagnosed, as the Traffic Inspectorate Graz announced.

The authority emphasizes that both accidents occurred within just a few days in Graz, and in both cases, the e-scooter riders continued their journeys after a brief conversation. In both cases, the cyclists suffered bone fractures that required inpatient or outpatient treatment.

Investigations and Witness Appeal

Graz police have initiated investigations into both incidents and are examining in particular whether criminal hit-and-run is involved. Since the e-scooter riders are at large in both cases, the success of the investigation depends significantly on information from the public.

The officers appeal to anyone who was on Keplerstraße on 2 July 2026 at around 14:00, in the area of the Hans-Resel-Gasse/Mariengasse intersection, or on the days prior on the same stretch of road and can provide information to come forward. Footage from dashcams or private video cameras could also be relevant to the investigations.

Legal Classification

The case throws a spotlight on the increasing conflicts between cyclists and e-scooter users on Graz's bicycle paths. The City of Graz had reported repeatedly in recent months about rising accident numbers involving e-scooters and had discussed measures such as speed limits and dedicated parking zones.

The incidents could also have consequences for the legal classification: Under Austrian law, leaving the scene of a traffic accident involving injured persons can be classified as hit-and-run and punished by a prison sentence of up to one year.

Police announced that they will continue the investigations in the coming days and interview additional witnesses if necessary. If the suspicion of hit-and-run is substantiated, the Graz Public Prosecutor's Office will be brought in.

Both cyclists are in stable condition, according to police. The 21-year-old was treated on an outpatient basis, and the 35-year-old is being treated as an inpatient.
