Two Serious Traffic Accidents in Styria: Motorcyclist and Family Injured

Family car crashes on the A2

According to police, the 46-year-old driver left the motorway on the right side "presumably due to a microsleep." The man was injured in the accident.

According to the information, his 50-year-old wife was also in the vehicle in the front passenger seat, and the two sons, aged ten and twelve, were in the back seat. The children were also injured and received medical care.

After initial treatment, the family was taken to the LKH Graz hospital. There was initially no conclusive information available regarding the exact condition of the individual family members.

Investigations ongoing

The two accidents are only a few kilometers apart and kept multiple rescue services occupied simultaneously on Sunday afternoon. The police launched investigations to clarify the exact causes of the accidents.

In the case of the accident on the B114, initial investigations indicate that the motorcyclist's crash may be attributable to a self-caused incident. The police initially did not provide further details.

Microsleep as a possible cause

In the accident on the A2, microsleep is considered a possible cause — a state in which affected persons fall asleep unconsciously for fractions of a second. The police pointed out that this is an initial assessment.

The A2 had to be partially closed in the Großwilfersdorf area while rescue vehicles and responders were deployed at the scene. The B114 was also affected for the duration of the recovery operations.
