In Beuvrages near Valenciennes, two 15-month-old twin girls died of dehydration during a heat wave, while their four siblings, aged three to six, were also taken to a hospital with dehydration.

The two girls were discovered dead in their beds at midday in Beuvrages near Valenciennes, as reported by French media citing police sources. According to RTL and other French media, the parents themselves were responsible for the emergency call, but the rescue services arrived too late. "Die Zwillinge sollen sich bereits im Zustand der Leichenstarre befunden haben", the reports continued.

Heat warning and discovery

According to initial investigations, the twins died of a lack of water: "sind in Nordfrankreich zwei 15 Monate alte Zwillinge nach ersten Ermittlungen bei sich zu Hause an Wassermangel gestorben". The tragedy occurred during a phase of unusually high temperatures. For large parts of France, including the north, the highest heat warning level, red, had been in effect in the preceding days. Toward the weekend, temperatures in France had dropped again, as the meteorological service noted.
