Two tourists were arrested by police in Istanbul's Hagia Sophia because they allegedly read aloud from the Bible in the building, which is used as a mosque.
The incident had already occurred on Tuesday, the Turkish state news agency Anadolu reported. According to the report, the two visitors were detained by police in the visitor zone of the Hagia Sophia and then handed over to the immigration authority. According to the Russian state agency Tass, they are Russian nationals.
Investigations are being conducted against the two on charges of incitement to hatred and hostility, it was said. The agency initially provided no more precise details on the content of the reading or the behavior of the two tourists. It is also unclear exactly in which area of the Hagia Sophia the reading took place and how loud it was for it to be deemed conspicuous by the authorities.
