In an apartment building in Dortmund's Nordstadt, a toddler fell from a first-floor window late on Wednesday evening, and the mother jumped after him.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 21:02 in a building on Mallinckrodtstraße in the Dortmund district. Based on current findings, the boy fell from a first-floor window to the ground below. The mother reacted immediately and jumped after the child.
Police and emergency services arrived at the scene after a short time. Both individuals – the child and the mother – were taken with injuries to nearby hospitals. The Dortmund police initially provided no further details on their condition.
How the fall could have happened is the subject of the ongoing investigation. The criminal police have begun their work, according to the Dortmund police, to clarify the exact sequence of events.
Witnesses who observed the incident or can provide information are asked to contact the Dortmund police.
Regardless of the specific case, safety authorities regularly point out that windows within children's reach should be secured with lockable handles or additional protective devices.
The Nordstadt district has repeatedly been the scene of operations in the past in which police showed a greater presence. However, regarding the current incident, investigators initially provided no information on a possible connection to earlier incidents.
Media reports describing dramatic scenes immediately after the fall depict agitated neighbours waiting for the emergency services. These accounts could not yet be independently confirmed.
The police announced that further information on the condition of the injured and on the progress of the investigation would be published during the course of Thursday.
Accident prevention agencies advise parents and guardians to secure windows from the ground floor upwards in homes with small children, and to keep keys for lockable handles out of children's reach.
In other German cities as well, there have been repeated incidents in recent years of toddlers falling from windows or balconies. The German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) considers this an avoidable type of accident that can be prevented by simple structural measures.
In the specific case on Mallinckrodtstraße, the investigations are ongoing. The Dortmund police are asking for witness information and refer to their regular contact channels.
Until the investigations are completed, the two injured are considered victims of an accident, as the police put it. Further assessments – such as possible allegations against third parties – would be premature at this point in time.
