Seven-year-old falls from children's room window in Pabneukirchen approximately five meters to the ground

Course of the accident

The exact circumstances of the fall from the window are not yet known, as the Upper Austrian police announced. Whether the window was open at the time of the fall and how the boy came to fall out are part of the ongoing investigations.

Pabneukirchen is located in the district of Perg in the Mühlviertel region of Upper Austria. The municipality has a rural character; according to police, the scene of the accident is in a residential area without any particular risk factors.

Emergency services treated the seven-year-old at the scene of the accident before the rescue helicopter arrived. The mother accompanied her son during the transport to the hospital. The helicopter took the boy directly to Med Campus IV, a hospital in Linz.

Deployment of rescue services

The authorities secured evidence at the scene and began interviewing those present. Such incidents in Austria typically result in a report to the responsible district administrative authority as well as a review by the youth welfare agency if there are indications of breaches of supervision duties.

Prevention experts regularly point out that windows in children's rooms should be secured with lockable handles or shatterproof grilles, especially on higher floors. In multi-family buildings and older single-family homes, however, such safeguards are not consistently in place.

The Upper Austrian police opened an investigation and will forward the incident to the relevant authorities upon completion of the investigations. Residents reported the arrival of several rescue vehicles late on Sunday evening.

Medical care and prognosis

The boy was flown to the clinic in stable condition – responsive as far as is known – after receiving initial treatment at the scene of the accident. Medical staff took over further treatment there. The authorities did not initially comment on possible injuries.

A fall from approximately five meters is considered medically significant: impact on concrete can cause serious injuries. The prognosis depends on the extent of the injuries, according to sources among the emergency services. Examinations at the hospital continued on Monday.

The incident is reminiscent of several similar accidents in recent years in Upper Austria in which children fell from windows on the first or second floor. The numbers of such accidents are low overall in Austria, but the consequences can be severe.

The municipality of Pabneukirchen and the district of Perg did not comment on Sunday evening beyond the police announcement. According to residents, the population was shocked by the accident, while at the same time relieved that the boy survived the fall according to initial information.
