Kyiv, 15 June 2026
Ukrainian officials condemned a large-scale Russian missile and drone assault on Kyiv that struck residential buildings, set the UNESCO-listed Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastic complex ablaze, and killed five rescuers in the eastern city of Kharkiv.
Scale of the overnight barrage
A wave of powerful explosions echoed across Kyiv overnight as ballistic missiles and Shahed drones hit civilian sites in the Shevchenkivskyi and Obolonskyi districts. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said: "Kyiv is under the main strike. There is significant destruction of civilian infrastructure,". A market and a grocery store in Shevchenkivskyi caught fire, and a nine-story residential building in Obolonskyi took a direct hit. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, said twenty people, including a child, sought medical help in the capital, and a 25-story apartment block in Shevchenkivskyi was among the buildings damaged.
