Geneva, 03 July 2026
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, warned on Friday at a special session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva of a new human rights catastrophe in Sudan and called on the international community to take action.
"The signs of this are unmistakable," Türk said. With regard to the situation in the city of al-Obeid, the capital of the state of North Kordofan, he explained: "We are at alarm level red." The RSF militias and their allies would be massing troops around the strategically important city in order to capture it in their fight against the army.
In the capital of the state of North Kordofan, the civilian population has been subjected to a siege-like situation for 18 months, according to Türk. The supply of clean drinking water has reached a critical point. In addition, there are ongoing drone attacks while the Sudanese army and the RSF are fighting for control of the region. "The water is contaminated," the High Commissioner warned.
