Background: The El Niño phenomenon

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has appealed to the international community to prepare for an El Niño event of previously unknown intensity. According to WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo, sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific are currently higher than at any other time in the past 40 years of recorded data. "In the past 40 years in which data has been collected, there have never been such high sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific," Saulo said in Geneva.
