UN Secretary-General António Guterres has described the ongoing El Niño phase as an accelerant of the climate crisis and called on the international community to take immediate action.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has described the current El Niño weather situation as a factor intensifying global warming. In a statement, he said the phenomenon was "pouring oil on the fire of a planet that is already ablaze." He thereby tied in with earlier warnings about the consequences of climate change.
Guterres had repeatedly pointed out in recent months the urgency of consistent climate policy. As recently as July, he had emphasized that wealthy countries were not sufficiently fulfilling their commitments to reduce greenhouse gases. The current declaration comes at a time when both the WMO and national weather services are registering rising temperatures and extreme weather events worldwide.
