In the election for the Russian State Duma, initial forecasts point to a victory for the party United Russia, but with a result below 50 percent of the votes.
The Central Election Commission, headed by Ella Pamfilova, released preliminary figures on Sunday evening showing that the Kremlin party United Russia has defended its place as the largest faction in the State Duma. Nevertheless, the result remains clearly below the figures of previous elections and, for the first time in a long while, falls below the 50 percent mark.
Forecast and preliminary figures
The agency Interfax transmitted the extrapolations, which were compiled after polling stations closed in most regions. According to these, United Russia receives the largest share of the vote, followed by several smaller parties that also succeed in entering the Duma. Specific percentages and seat distributions were left open in the forecasts.
