WASHINGTON, 10 July 2026
President Donald Trump said the United States has agreed to renewed talks with Iran at Tehran's request, while declaring that the ceasefire between the two countries is over.
Background
In a post on his online platform Truth Social, Trump wrote that the Iranian government had asked Washington to continue negotiations aimed at ending the war. The US president did not announce a date, venue or delegation for the talks in his remarks, but framed the decision as a concession to a request from Tehran rather than a new US initiative.
Trump was emphatic, however, that the period of truce between Washington and Tehran was finished. "Wir haben dem zugestimmt, aber die Vereinigten Staaten haben dem Iran unmissverständlich mitgeteilt, dass die Waffenruhe VORBEI ist", he wrote. He added that this message had been delivered "unmissverständlich" — unambiguously — to the Islamic Republic, suggesting that any renewed diplomacy would proceed from a position of renewed US pressure rather than a continuing pause in hostilities.
