US and Cuban Military Officials Hold Rare Meeting at Guantanamo Bay Amid Rising Tensions

A Disputed Territory

The Guantanamo Bay base, located on the southeastern coast of Cuba, has been under US control since 1903 under a lease agreement that Cuba has considered invalid since the 1959 revolution. The territory also houses a notorious US detention camp.

The talks occurred against a backdrop of sharply escalating tensions. The Trump administration has imposed new sanctions on Cuba and threatened to take over the island state. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, has described Cuba as a security risk.

President Donald Trump repeatedly threatened to 'take control' of Cuba. The US has also imposed an oil blockade and new sanctions aimed at forcing economic and political change in the communist-run country.

Economic Crisis and Political Pressure

Cuba is experiencing its worst economic crisis since the collapse of the Soviet Union, with widespread power outages and fuel shortages. The situation worsened after Washington ensured that Venezuela, previously Cuba's most important oil supplier, halted its deliveries to the Caribbean state.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel warned on X in May that any US military operation against Cuba would lead to a 'bloodbath' with incalculable consequences for peace and stability in the region. Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla told the UN Security Council that his country faces a 'humanitarian catastrophe.'

Rodríguez Parrilla called on the international community to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe that could be caused by armed force or the fuel blockade. Cuba is approximately 145 kilometers from the southern tip of Florida and has been under a strict US economic embargo since 1962.

Military Posture and Regional Fallout

The news portal Axios reported that Cuba purchased more than 300 military drones and discussed scenarios for possible attacks on the US base at Guantanamo. The Cuban government rejected that report.

In a separate development, the US Justice Department indicted Cuba's former president Raúl Castro, 94, for the downing of two civilian aircraft in 1996 that killed four people. Raúl Castro is the brother of former revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.

The US military also captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January and forcibly brought him to the United States, further reshaping regional dynamics.
