The US government under President Donald Trump announced on Friday a far-reaching amendment to the Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973, which significantly weakens protections for threatened and endangered species in the United States.
The new rule primarily affects a new legal definition of the term "harm" to animals and plants and their habitats, which ultimately makes the protective provisions less strict. In the future, oil and gas drilling, mining, forestry, and other development projects in critical wildlife habitats will be permitted, provided the animals themselves are not killed or injured. Previously, the destruction of habitats could be classified as harm.
