According to this, US intelligence agencies have updated their assessments of possible Russian options and see an increased risk of provocations along NATO's eastern border, particularly with regard to Poland and the Baltic states.

The reaction in Washington is measured but clear. US officials pointed out, according to the report, that NATO would respond to such a test thanks to its collective defense clause. At the same time, intelligence work in the eastern member states is being intensified in order to detect possible precursors of an attack at an early stage.

Poland, which borders Ukraine and has one of the longest land borders with the Russian sphere of influence, is considered particularly exposed. Warsaw has significantly increased its defense spending in recent years and expanded the presence of allied forces on its territory.

Should a limited Russian incursion actually occur, it would raise the central question of whether and how quickly the alliance would respond collectively.

Article 5 collective defense as a central factor

US intelligence agencies have not publicly commented on the findings in detail. Representatives of the US government pointed to the sensitive nature of intelligence assessments and at the same time emphasized the willingness to support allies with all available information.

Despite the warnings, Western governments emphasize that an attack on a NATO state would trigger the collective defense case. Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty obliges all members to assist an attacked ally. A Russian provocation would thus be associated with a high risk of escalation that, according to the assessment of many experts, could go beyond a limited test.
