US military forces fired a missile at the Gambia-flagged merchant vessel M/V Lian Star in the Gulf of Oman on Friday after it failed to comply with warnings and approached an Iranian port in defiance of a US naval blockade.
The US regional command Centcom reported the incident on the social media platform X, stating that the ship was rendered unmaneuverable by the strike. The action followed more than 20 warning shots, which the vessel ignored as it continued toward Iran.
The M/V Lian Star was flying under the flag of Gambia and was attempting to enter an Iranian port, according to Centcom. The US has maintained a naval blockade in the region aimed at increasing economic pressure on Tehran by targeting ships entering or leaving Iranian ports.
