The US armed forces struck Iranian targets for the third consecutive night on Tuesday night, as the regional command Centcom announced late in the evening (local time) via the platform X.
At 4:45 p.m. US Eastern Time (10:45 p.m. CEST), the armed forces launched the attacks, according to the statement from the responsible US military regional command. It is the third consecutive night in which the United States has targeted Iranian positions. The US military justified the attacks with Iran's attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
Military's justification: Protection of commercial shipping
The regional command Centcom stated that the attacks were aimed at further restricting Iran's ability to carry out attacks on innocent civilians and commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. With this, the United States cited the protection of civilian shipping lanes, through which a significant portion of global oil trade is handled, as the official objective. The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the most important and at the same time most vulnerable waterways in the world.
Just a few hours before the new attacks, US President Donald Trump announced further attacks by his country on Iran in a radio interview on Monday afternoon (local time). Trump said: „Man werde das Land heute Abend hart treffen - genau wie morgen“ and added: „Der Iran könne nichts dagegen tun, hob er hervor“. With this clear posture of threats, the US government had publicly prepared the military step before Centcom officially reported it.
