The Strait of Hormuz connects the Gulf of Oman with the Persian Gulf and is considered one of the most important shipping routes for global trade in oil and liquefied gas. Ships in the region are attacked "again and again," according to the report, significantly weighing on the security of maritime trade routes.

Significance of the strait for world trade

The US side stated that its own troop and escort protection was having an effect. Trump pointed out that the escorting of tankers by US forces had secured transit through the strait. Centcom emphasized that traffic through the strait continued "unimpeded" despite the Iranian drone attacks.

The developments underscore the fragile security situation in one of the most central waterways for the global energy economy. Should the naval blockade persist or the Strait of Hormuz be permanently closed, this would have immediate consequences for global oil and gas prices. At the same time, the continued willingness of both sides to talk indicates that a diplomatic solution is still being pursued.

It remains unclear whether the latest drone incidents will further burden the ongoing negotiations or whether the announced framework agreement can pave the way for a lasting de-escalation.
