Background: Ceasefire Under Pressure

According to the state news agency IRNA, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) stated they had targeted Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and the US 5th Fleet in Bahrain. The US Army subsequently attacked Iranian targets, including radar installations on Qeshm Island in the Hormuz and further radar positions in the town of Goruk. According to the US military, the attacks served a clear purpose: "to defend against further attacks."

The background to the escalation is a ceasefire between the US and Iran, which has been in effect for almost two months. However, in recent weeks, there have been repeated isolated mutual attacks by both parties to the conflict. In parallel, negotiations are underway for a framework agreement to end the war. US and Iranian negotiators had fundamentally agreed about a week ago to extend the ceasefire by 60 days and to begin a new round of talks on Iran's nuclear program.

Trump's Position Between Diplomacy and Threat

Speaking to journalists on Friday, Donald Trump expressed himself comparatively calmly: "the situation with Iran seems to be going quite well." At an appearance with farmers in Wisconsin, he also said: "We're going to come out of Iran very quickly and it's going to be very strong one way or the other, whether it's a piece of paper or the very tough way." And further: "The very tough way is maybe the easier way, but we're going to come out, and your fertilizer prices are going to go way down, just like they were four months ago."

In an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press," Trump attributed the sluggish negotiations to Tehran's stance, adding, "it's a very hard thing for them," but also noting that the Iranians are "strong" and "proud." Trump also stated that the Iranians still had 21 to 22 percent of their missiles remaining.

Economic Pressure: Blockade and Sanctions

The US military is simultaneously increasing economic pressure on Tehran: it is enforcing a blockade of Iranian ports. On Friday, US forces boarded a sanctioned oil tanker with ties to Iran in the Indian Ocean. In addition, the US imposed new sanctions against individuals, companies, and tankers in the Iranian energy sector.

Escalation in the Region: Lebanon and Hezbollah

The situation in the region remains fragile. Just this week, Iranian drones had severely damaged a passenger terminal at Kuwait's main airport, killing one person and injuring dozens more. Air traffic had to be temporarily suspended. At the same time, Israel is intensifying its military presence in Lebanon: the Israeli army carried out attacks on several locations in southern Lebanon on Friday and issued evacuation warnings for nine villages. According to the Lebanese news agency, nine people were killed in six different locations. The Lebanese government and Israel had agreed to a US-mediated ceasefire this week.

However, the Shiite Hezbollah militia, supported by Iran, rejects the agreement. Israeli troops have now brought large parts of southern Lebanon under their control. Iran is demanding that a permanent ceasefire must also include Lebanon. Should the violence escalate again in one of the theaters, the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran threatens to break definitively.

Meanwhile, the US government continues to pursue a diplomatic solution. Trump signaled readiness to end the conflict either through an agreement or militarily. Which path will be taken will likely also depend on whether the ongoing negotiations for a framework agreement lead to a lasting settlement. Until then, the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important shipping routes, remains a highly contested military area.
