The US military said it sank an Iranian oil tanker near Kharg Island in the Gulf of Oman on Saturday in response to Iranian attacks on two American ships, the latest escalation between Washington and Tehran.
The strike was carried out after Iranian forces targeted two US vessels over the weekend, according to Central Command. Centcom said the US ships were able to evade the incoming missiles and that no American personnel were injured in the attacks. "Es gab keine Verletzten," the command said in its statement on the earlier incident.
Centcom commander Brad Cooper framed the tanker strike as a deliberate, calibrated response. In remarks reported by multiple outlets, Cooper warned the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps after the Saturday attacks: "Wenn ihr auf zwei unserer Schiffe schießt, werden wir euch noch höhere wirtschaftliche Kosten auferlegen - indem wir drei eurer Schiffe ausschalten." Cooper added that US forces were prepared to destroy what he described as Iran's numerically limited and unprotected oil fleet.
