Following a Supreme Court ruling, the US government is refunding a total of approximately $81.3 billion in tariff fees, of which around $70 billion was paid out in May and June alone.

From October 2025 through the end of June, approximately $81.3 billion US dollars (nearly 72.9 billion euros) flowed back to companies and importers, according to Treasury Department data. As a department spokesperson confirmed, the overwhelming majority of these refunds is attributable to a Supreme Court ruling from February. In the comparable period of the previous year, the figure stood at just under $5.3 billion.

Supreme Court Ruling as the Trigger

In February, however, the Supreme Court ruled that the President had overstepped his authority with much of the surcharges he had imposed. After the highest US court declared tariffs based on an emergency law unlawful in mid-February, many companies applied for refunds of the fees paid. The Supreme Court found that US President Trump had exceeded his powers when he imposed extensive tariffs against dozens of trading partners.
