Austria's mobility organisation VCÖ is demanding mandatory unsealing, greening and tree planting at large parking lots in Carinthia, citing rising heat-related health risks for nearby residents.

The call comes as forecasters predict an even hotter weekend, with sun-exposed asphalt surfaces heating up to around 60 degrees Celsius. VCÖ expert Klara Maria Schenk said many large parking lots have become "asphalt deserts", warning that the heat stored in these surfaces intensifies the burden on people living nearby both day and night. "Damit wird sowohl tagsüber als auch in der Nacht die Belastung für Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner in der Umgebung verschärft", she said.

Citing data from the AGES health agency, the VCÖ pointed to a rising toll of heat deaths in Carinthia. According to the agency, 43 premature deaths from heat were recorded in the province last year and 63 in 2024, with 226 heat-related deaths recorded in Carinthia over the past five years.
