Caracas, July 12, 2026
The Venezuelan government has announced the construction of temporary single-family housing for those left homeless by the earthquake, roughly two weeks after the double earthquake of June 24.
Scale of the Disaster
Just over two weeks after the severe double earthquake in Venezuela, the death toll has risen to more than 4,300 according to the government. Parliament President Jorge Rodríguez, the brother of transitional President Delcy Rodríguez, cited the figure of 4,333 dead at a press conference on Saturday. The day before, he had announced 4,118 deaths as the new toll. The death toll thus rose by more than 200 within a single day.
The two earthquakes, of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, struck Venezuela on June 24 just 39 seconds apart. It was one of the most severe earthquake disasters in the country's history. More than 850 buildings have collapsed or been severely damaged, and nearly 18,000 people have lost their homes according to official figures.
Given the dramatic situation, the government has announced the construction of temporary single-family housing for those affected. The measure is intended to provide a minimum degree of protection and stability for the people enduring conditions in makeshift camps. Rodríguez stated that more than 19,000 people are currently living in makeshift camps.
