Double Earthquake in Venezuela: Death Toll Rises to More Than 2,900

Extent of the Destruction

On 24 June, two strong earthquakes struck northern Venezuela in quick succession. The hardest-hit area was the state of La Guaira, located north of the capital Caracas. The tremors caused massive damage to residential buildings and infrastructure in the region.

Beyond the dead and missing, the consequences for the population are enormous: nearly 16,600 people were also injured. The number of injured underscores the scale of the disaster and poses significant challenges to the healthcare system in the affected regions.

Situation of the Survivors

More than 16,000 people have lost their homes, according to the figures, and are dependent on emergency shelters and aid deliveries. 856 houses were damaged in the quakes, many of them likely so severely that they are no longer habitable.

The authorities have since been working on recovery and clearing operations, but the full extent of the destruction remains unclear. Given the large number of missing, aid workers assume that the casualty figures will continue to rise once further areas become accessible.

International Reactions

International organizations, including the United Nations, have announced their support and are providing data on missing persons as well as humanitarian aid. However, the exact number of those still missing continues to be withheld by the Venezuelan government.

The disaster strikes Venezuela in an already tense phase: economic difficulties and a precarious supply situation are further complicating efforts to cope with the aftermath. International aid and coordinated search and rescue operations are now crucial to stabilize the situation for the survivors.
