Vienna, May 19, 2026
Two young women were sentenced to partly suspended prison terms at Vienna Regional Court on Tuesday for a series of arsons that terrorized the city last fall. The defendants, aged 18 and 19, were part of a group calling itself "Feuerteufel 1040" (Fire Devil 1040), responsible for 18 incidents including six completed arsons.
Motivations and Methods
The women admitted to setting fires primarily in Vienna's fourth district, where they left their signature "Feuerteufel 1040" graffiti at two crime scenes. According to court testimony, they used nail polish remover as an accelerant and filmed some of their arsons along with the subsequent firefighting efforts.
"We have überlegt, etwas zu machen, was uns einen Kick gibt," said the older defendant, explaining their initial motivation. She described how seeing the fires and emergency responses excited them: "Es war aufregend. Es hat einen Kick gegeben." Their crimes escalated from a single trash container fire on November 1, 2025, to targeting building stairwells and ground-floor apartments.
