A gas explosion tore through a single-family house in Vienna's Floridsdorf district shortly before midnight on Saturday, 4 July 2026, completely destroying the building and injuring nine people, while a 93-year-old resident has been arrested on suspicion of deliberately triggering the blast.
What is new since the last report
The blast ripped through the allotment-garden settlement (Kleingartensiedlung) in Großjedlersdorf, a part of Wien-Floridsdorf, in the early hours of Sunday, 5 July 2026. Firefighters, rescue workers and police were deployed in large numbers and secured the site for several hours. The rescue and recovery operation continued until 3:30 a.m., according to Vienna's professional rescue service, the Berufsrettung Wien.
According to rescue services, a total of ten people were injured in the incident. A Berufsrettung spokesperson offered a stark description of what first responders encountered. "Die Explosion muss wie ein Raketeneinschlag gewesen sein," the spokesperson said, adding: "Es grenzt an ein Wunder, dass nicht mehr passiert ist."
Previous coverage set out the basic allegation: a 93-year-old resident was found by rescue workers in the cellar of the destroyed house and pulled out with injuries, then taken to an intensive care unit. KURIER had reported that the man is suspected of deliberately bringing about the gas explosion that destroyed his own home.
Suspect detained on suspicion of endangerment
What's new since the previous version is the formal detention of the suspect and a fuller picture of the casualty toll. On the basis of the existing suspicion of deliberate endangerment (vorsätzliche Gemeingefährdung), prosecutors ordered the 93-year-old to be taken into custody, and he is now being guarded in a hospital.
The most seriously injured person — variously reported as a 93- or 94-year-old man — was reportedly in the basement of the single-family home (Einfamilienhaus) at the time of the explosion. He suffered second-degree burns and was admitted to an intensive care unit, according to the Berufsrettung.
Casualties and injuries
Eight other people were injured in addition to the elderly resident. Only two of those eight required hospitalisation: a 45-year-old man and a heavily pregnant woman. The pregnant woman, who is in her 34th week of pregnancy, was thrown onto her stomach by the blast. "Sie wurde durch die Explosion auf den Bauch geschleudert," the Berufsrettung spokesperson said. The same outlet, citing the rescue service, reported she "auf ihren Bauch gefallen sein dürfte." A third person — described as another man — was also taken to hospital, while the remaining injured persons received outpatient treatment.
The pregnant woman was taken to hospital for further treatment alongside the seriously injured man. Images from the scene show the residential building completely destroyed. "Es sah aus, als ob eine Bombe eingeschlagen hat. Vom Gebäude ist nicht mehr viel übrig," the Berufsrettung spokesperson told the outlet '5 Minuten'. Other neighbouring buildings were also damaged by the blast, and numerous neighbours were woken from sleep by the loud bang.
