Vienna Man on Trial for Racist Attacks, Including Assault on 10-Year-Old Boy

Earlier that same day, the man had already caused a disturbance in a U1 subway station, where he verbally abused a family with two small children using racist slurs. When another passenger intervened, the defendant punched them and then made a Hitler salute, an act that was captured on video by a bystander.

This was not his first offense. On August 12, 2025, he had provoked a police response at a tram stop by shouting anti-foreigner slogans.

Defense Cites Mental Health and Alcohol

The defendant’s lawyer acknowledged his client’s actions, stating, *"The accusations are correct."* He argued that the man’s behavior stemmed from severe depression and excessive alcohol consumption. *"My client takes full responsibility for his actions,"* the defense said, but insisted the *"real problem"* was his mental health and substance abuse.

The trial was adjourned until May 26 to hear testimony from another witness. If convicted, the defendant could face charges under Austria’s strict laws against Nazi symbolism and racially motivated violence.
