Vienna, July 2, 2026
Police in Vienna are searching for a man, approximately 40 years old, who is alleged to have paid with counterfeit 100-euro banknotes in stores in the Mariahilf and Innere Stadt districts as well as on Fleischmarkt and Kärntner Straße between late March and late April 2026.
Investigators at the Vienna State Criminal Police Office assume that the wanted man paid with counterfeit money in at least three stores. According to the information, he deliberately selected low-value goods and initially passed a genuine 100-euro banknote across the counter.
Immediately afterward, the man is said to have surreptitiously pushed forward a counterfeit 100-euro note and claimed that he did not have enough small change. Because he allegedly did not have sufficient coins, he handed over another 100-euro note. In this way, he received the change and left the stores.
