Research groups led by Agnes Dellinger have used artificial vibrations and high-speed cameras to show how flowering plants release pollen through the oscillations of bees.

Background: Pollen ejection in flowering plants

Researchers at the University of Vienna have investigated how pollen ejection works in plants. The study focused on the fine vibrations that bees generate on flowers when they land and move around. These oscillations are apparently the trigger that causes the plants to specifically launch their pollen from the anthers.

The team used a combination of high-speed cameras and artificial devices to mimic the vibrations of bee bodies. In doing so, the researchers were able to observe how the anthers contract under certain frequencies and press the pollen outward through small openings, so-called anther pores. This makes the mechanism of pollen ejection visible, which cannot be detected with the naked eye.
