A team at the Medical University of Vienna has identified 27 genetic regions associated with a susceptibility to an imbalance of the internal clock in a large-scale genome study.

The results were published on Wednesday in the journal "eBioMedicine." The research team led by Eva Schernhammer and Magdalena Zebrowska from the Center for Public Health at the Medical University of Vienna analyzed genetic data from 312,935 participants in the UK Biobank, one of the largest biomedical research databases in the world. The UK Biobank is a British cohort study in which health and genetic data from hundreds of thousands of people have been collected over many years.

At the center of the investigation was the so-called "Circadian Imbalance Index." This index was developed in an earlier study by the same team and bundles several characteristics that provide indications of an imbalance of the internal clock. The characteristics captured therein include an evening chronotype (the tendency to become active and tired later in the course of the day), an unusually short or long sleep duration, a stronger tendency toward negative emotionality (neuroticism), an atypical caffeine consumption, and low vitamin D levels.
