Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced on 27 June his resignation within a few weeks to enable snap parliamentary and presidential elections in October.

The announcement follows around a year and a half of government-critical protests across the country. Vučić stated that he would step down within weeks to clear the way for the new elections. With this, the country's leadership is responding to the persistent domestic political pressure, which had also expressed itself in demonstrations in several Serbian cities.
