Walk-In Fabric Cave Opens on the Pont Neuf: Artist JR Wraps Parisian Bridge

Homage to Christo and Jeanne-Claude

According to the organizers, the project is a homage to the artist couple Christo and Jeanne-Claude, who once caused a worldwide sensation with the wrapping of the Pont Neuf. The later wrapping of the Berlin Reichstag in 1995 is also considered a legendary work by the couple. JR takes up the idea of fabric wrapping with his installation and carries it forward in the form of a walk-in cave.

The Pont Neuf is the oldest stone bridge that still exists in the city of Paris today. It connects the Île de la Cité, the historic Seine island in the center of the capital, with both banks of the Seine. For the duration of the installation, it has become a walk-in artwork that visitors can experience in a new way.

Artist JR and His Works in Public Space

The artist JR, whose real name is Jean René, is known for large-scale works in public spaces. His projects frequently combine photography, street art, and installation and are realized at prominent locations around the globe. With the Pont Neuf wrapping, he continues this tradition and chose a site that was already art-historically marked by Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

According to the organizers, the installation can be visited until 28 June. This gives visitors around two weeks to walk through the work on the bridge. Organizers recommend planning for longer waiting times, as the walk-in cave can only accommodate a limited number of people at once.

Inside the Walk-In Cave

Inside the installation, visitors are said to immerse themselves in an artificial cave landscape. The fabric surfaces are designed to imitate rock walls and cave ceilings. Through lighting and acoustic elements, according to the artist, a distinct sense of space is created that differs significantly from the usual cityscape along the Seine.

The wrapping of the Pont Neuf by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in 1985 is considered one of the best-known works of Land Art and fabric wrapping art. Millions of people visited the temporary structure on the bridge at the time. JR's current installation ties in with this tradition and once again turns the historic site into a center of international attention.

Participating Artists and Music

Other artists were also involved in the project. Among them is the musician Thomas Bangalter, who is part of the former French electronic duo Daft Punk. His involvement underscores the collaborative character of the work, which brings together several disciplines from visual art, music, and architecture.

The City of Paris is supporting the project as a temporary cultural attraction along the Seine. Residents and tourists must expect altered walking routes around the bridge during its run. The organizers point out that the Pont Neuf itself is partially closed to traffic during the wrapping and that visitors should use alternative routes.
