Heat and drought have triggered a debate over water consumption in several European countries, with municipal associations and politicians nationwide demanding uniform rules for water extraction as well as extraction fees for commercial, industrial, and agricultural use.
In Munich, Dublin, and other regions of Europe, extensive restrictions on water consumption have been in place for days. In the Bavarian state capital, filling private pools, sprinkling lawns, and pumping water from lakes and rivers are prohibited. Mayor Dominik Krause (Greens) justified the move by saying that "nach einem außergewöhnlich trockenen Winter und Frühling" the resources of Munich's water supply were "derzeit äußerst strapaziert". Violations can result in fines of up to 50,000 euros.
