Manfred Weber has called for a 'fundamental, in-depth discussion' on the future course of the Christian Social Union, urging the party to follow its convictions rather than opinion polls.
In an interview with the Funke Mediengruppe newspapers published on Saturday, Weber, who also serves as chairman of the European People's Party in Brussels, said the party needs courage. "We need the courage not to follow the polls, but to follow our hearts," he stated.
A 'Wake-Up Call' After Election Setback
Weber's comments come after he sent a 'Pentecost letter' to numerous mandate holders days earlier, which contained similar messages and drew public attention. The letter received backing from CSU honorary chairman and Theo Waigel, who described it as a 'wake-up call' in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
