A dangerous heatwave is sweeping across Western Europe, forcing authorities in France and Italy to issue high-level warnings as temperatures climb well above seasonal averages.

In France, the second-highest heat warning level was extended to the greater Paris area on Thursday, with temperatures expected to reach up to 35 degrees Celsius in the capital and up to 39 degrees in the south. The warning now covers 17 départements, primarily in the west of the country.

The French government convened a crisis meeting for Thursday afternoon to coordinate the response. Health Minister Stéphanie Rist urged people to drink regularly, close shutters during the day, and limit physical activities. An ozone warning is also in effect for the greater Paris area and southern France, leading to driving bans for vehicles that emit particularly high levels of pollutants.
