Geneva, June 03, 2026

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated in Geneva that the Ebola outbreak in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to be ahead of containment efforts.

Following a multi-day visit to the affected region, Tedros said in Geneva on Wednesday that the disease has a head start, and "we are still lagging behind." The WHO assumes a high number of unreported cases. According to authorities, there are now 363 confirmed cases in the east of the country, while the WHO itself speaks of 344 confirmed cases with 60 deaths. The discrepancy between the figures is explained by ongoing updates and the assumption of many unreported infections.
