Geneva, June 29, 2026

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has recorded more than 1,300 additional deaths in Europe linked to the high temperatures since June 21 and warned of the consequences of the heat wave.

Record Values in Several European Countries

Tedros spoke over the weekend via the platform X and pointed to the seriousness of the situation. "Europe is the fastest-warming continent on Earth – warming is occurring twice as fast as the global average," the WHO Director-General wrote. The heat wave had once again produced record values, including 41.7 degrees in Germany, 41.1 degrees in the Czech Republic, and a preliminary peak of 40.5 degrees in the Polish border town of Slubice on the Oder. In Switzerland, a June record of 39 degrees was measured according to the report.
