The World Health Organization (WHO) considers the Hantavirus outbreak linked to the cruise of the ship "Hondius" to be largely over; the total number of cases remains at 13, including three deaths, and 30 contacts are still being monitored.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote on the platform X that the situation remained stable. The health authority thus classifies the outbreak as being in a phase in which no new infections are being reported and the remaining monitoring can soon be completed. „Die Lage bleibe stabil“, so die WHO in dem Update.

Background: Outbreak on the "Hondius"

The outbreak had attracted attention in mid-May. On a cruise of the Dutch shipping company Oceanwide Expeditions' ship "Hondius," which had begun in Argentina, several people had become infected with the Hantavirus — specifically the South American Andes type of the virus. Around 150 people from 23 countries were reportedly on board the "Hondius." Because of the outbreak, the ship docked in May at the island of Tenerife, from where those on board were brought to their home countries under special safety precautions.
