The death toll from the wildfires in the southeastern Spanish province of Almería has risen to 13 after a 93-year-old British woman succumbed to her injuries on Sunday evening.
Background of the Fire
The woman was one of eight people hospitalized after the fire broke out on Thursday, four of them with serious injuries. She had suffered burns covering 20 percent of her body surface, according to a statement from the regional government on Sunday evening. The death toll from the wildfire had previously stood at twelve.
The fire broke out on Thursday afternoon in Los Gallardos in the Andalusian province of Almería. According to the authorities, the flames destroyed approximately 7,000 hectares of land in the municipality of Los Gallardos. More than 7,000 hectares of land in the municipality of Los Gallardos were devoured by the flames. Around 1,500 people were forced to leave the area temporarily.
