In a devastating forest fire in the southern Spanish province of Almería, at least twelve people lost their lives overnight into Friday, while emergency services continued to fight the flames on Saturday and search for missing persons.
Scale of the Fire
The fire broke out on Thursday evening in the area around the municipalities of Los Gallardos and Bédar, approximately 70 kilometers northeast of the provincial capital of Almería. According to official figures, the flames "Insgesamt wurden nach amtlichen Angaben 7.000 Hektar Wald- und Buschfläche zerstört". The fire zone is located not far from several Mediterranean beaches and is a popular destination for foreign tourists.
The victims lost their lives, according to authorities, when they attempted to flee the flames. "Sie wurden von den Flammen eingeschlossen, als sie in einem Fahrzeug oder zu Fuß zu fliehen versuchten", it was stated. Eight people were injured. "Aufgrund verschiedener Indizien gehen die Behörden davon aus, dass unter den Toten mehrere Briten und Belgier sind". A final identification has not yet been made.
